April 1, 2024, from the Pensacola DSA Steering Committee

Florida’s Supreme Court ruled to impose a six week abortion ban 30 days from now while also allowing a vote on Amendment 4 in November, which if passed would limit government interference with abortion, reversing the ban. Vote YES on 4!

What can we do right now to protect abortion care?

Florida’s Supreme Court just overturned long standing recognition that the right to privacy enshrined in the Florida Constitution protects the right to abortion, in doing so imposing a six week abortion ban thirty days from now. We affirm people’s inherent right to defy abortion bans. This deadly six-week abortion ban will hurt people and we will continue to provide information and resources for people to exercise their bodily autonomy.

With widespread voter disenfranchisement, a 60% threshold required for its passage, and other limits on democracy in Florida, Amendment 4 will take everybody to win, including our neighbors, coworkers, friends and family, and communities. Amendment 4 is crucial for the entire Southeast as Florida is a gateway to care. Its passage is also key for resuming abortion services in Pensacola after its clinic was unfairly shuttered by the Florida AHCA.

Amendment 4 is a crucial first step but will still allow politicians to restrict abortion for minors or after viability of a pregnancy. We affirm our longstanding position in support of free abortion on demand without apology! In DSA we pursue the long term goal of full reproductive freedom, including public funding of abortion, free or low cost abortion pills and contraceptives, free HIV prevention and treatment coverage, free and full coverage of life saving gender-affirming care, comprehensive sex education at fully funded public schools, the right of minors to consent to abortion care and gender-affirming care, a 32 hour work week, Medicare for All, social housing, and free child care.

Together in solidarity and well into the future, we will build a socialist majority in Florida to secure all of our rights so we may all live free.🌹
